Abortion

What is abortion?

Abortion is a deliberate action that ends pregnancy by terminating the life of the child in the womb.

Abortions can be performed both surgically and with drugs. There are many kinds of abortions, each with their own methods and risks, but the one thing all abortions have in common is the taking of an innocent human life.

In Roe v. Wade, the case that brought legal abortion to America, the Supreme Court stated that it was impossible to determine when human life began in the womb. They decided, that because it could not be "proved" that the fetus was a human being, it should be allowed to be legally destroyed.

This idea has continued to be upheld by abortion supporters, as well as the idea that "personhood" is somehow different from human life. The Supreme Court declared in Planned Parenthood v. Casey:

"At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life. Beliefs about these matters could not define the attributes of personhood were they formed under compulsion of the State."

Besides the moral fact that, if it is unsure whether or not the unborn child is human or not, one should err on the side of caution, the progress of science is showing with more and more certitude that the unborn child is indeed a living human being. In addition, every and any human is a person. This is non-negotiable. The idea that some humans are not persons is what drove slavery and eugenics and what continues to be responsible for legal and medical discrimination against the elderly, the mentally and physically disabled, and most importantly, the unborn child. From the moment of conception the unborn child is a living, human person, and saying anything else is tearing down the sacredness of human life and depriving everyone of their most important rights.
